Activity Description

COASA is a company specialised in the elaboration and distribution of local, traditionally-made foodstuffs. It groups and supervises a local network of small businesses with proprietary production centres; coordinating the quality control, packaging and distribution processes.
Although the approach to origin and handling of ingredients is intrinsically traditional, business common sense calls attention to the need for industrial aspects to take on an increased relevance, which shows in the progressive integration of innovative technological processes.

Products and Services

The ample choice of products can be classified into five areas:

  • Handmade cheese -with close to fifty varieties
  • Canned fish and shellfish recipes
  • Cured sausage (traditional or game) and apple cider (traditional, non-carbonated and wine-like, "new expression")
  • Honey and jams from collected wild berries and fruits cultivated in ecological farms
  • Fruit liqueurs and spirits, cider from autochthonous apples

COASA internally trains the staff of the production units in food handling and processing - a training service that is also commercially offered to external clients.

A success story

The final results of the 2009 CEEI/BIC Asturias project show an impressive success story:

  • Ten companies have entered consortia that have presented a total of 13 project proposals
  • One of the proposals was approved and is already underway (Research for the Benefit of SMEs)
  • Five more projects were approved for financing and are now in negotiation (four within the Research for the Benefit of SMEs program and one EUROSTARS)

  • One project reached the final evaluation in their call, reached by only two candidates

The Research for the Benefit of SMEs call final balance showed a total of 256 project proposals that scored 11 or more points, which made them eligible for financing. Finally the top 132 proposals (scores 12,5 and above) have initiated the negotiation process. The remaining eligible proposals have been included in the reserve list
